wear clay pigeon shooting If you’re starting out clayshooting then you’ll want to be correctly dressed. Most serious clay shooters tend to wear the same garments each time they go out, so that everything feels familiar. Muted colours that echo the countryside around are best but clayshooting isn’t as formal as driven shooting – you won’t need to wear a tie!

What you should take to wear

Ear protection This is absolutely essential for protecting your hearing.  You will almost certainly be handed some foam ear plugs as you arrive at the clay ground but it’s also worth turning up with ear defenders, which can be more comfortable and effective than foam ear plugs. Bespoke ear plugs and ear defenders are certainly worth looking into.

Eye protection. You’ll need some eye protectors to act as a barrier between your eyes and fragments of broken clays.

A shirt with a collar. This can be a short or long sleeved shirt or a polo shirt.  You don’t need to wear a tie on a clay pigeon shoot.

Trousers.  In winter these can be cord or moleskin. In summer you might like to opt for something lighter. Chinos would be quite acceptable.

Shooting vest. A gilet-type garment is very comfortable to wear when it’s cool and you need an extra layer. A shooting vest will also allow you to move freely.

Jacket. You might not need one in the summer but in winter a jacket is essential to keep you warm and dry. Make sure it has plenty of room around the arms so that you can swing through with the gun.

tweed cap

A hat or cap. Useful to keep the sun off your head and protect you from any rain that’s about. Also essential to protect your head from any falling bits of clay pigeon.

Shooting socks. Christmas gifts will never be a problem again.

Boots or sturdy shoes. The shooting ground can be uneven so you need footwear that will support your ankles. (Not trainers by the way.) Wellies are fine in winter but will be too hot come summer.

Gloves. The barrels of your shotgun are likely to get very hot – some people shoot 500 cartridges on a shoot day. To protect your hands, wear gloves.

Insect repellant. If you’re shooting in summer, this could come in handy.
