Retriever Training Tips: Creating Desire In Your Puppy

So you have an 8 week old puppy running around your house, and now you want to create a Gun Dog! I want to start out by saying, ENJOY THE JOURNEY because they are certainly not around long enough! And in my opinion this is not a sprint to the finish, it is a wonderful marathon! The whole family can become involved in this process, and it can be a wonderful learning experience for children in regards to responsibility!

1) GET YOUR HUNTING DOG AROUND LIVE BIRDS: This is one of the most important parts of this process in the very beginning. Get out and buy some pigeons, then clip their wings. This will allow your pup to chase them around increasing his/her desire to chase the prey for you! You will be amazed at how excited your pup will be!2) ROME WAS NOT BUILT IN A DAY: Keep retrieving a HAPPY TIME, and don’t apply to much pressure on your pup. This way he/she will be VERY EXCITED for the next training session, never getting bored! Short/exciting session are a huge key to the first 2-5 months of a pups life3) DON’T CREATE BAD HABITS: You don’t want to have spend later months fixing habits you created. So take some precautions. For instance: Do not chase your pup with anything in its mouth, because you don’t want to chase them when they have birds on a hunt. A good way to start on the right path is to only throw retrieves in hallways, so their is only one way back with the retrieved item! Then by praise you will instill a sense of confidence in your young hunting dog.
