THE PROPER GEAR FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDING
Posted on December 09, 2014
In choosing the right motorcycle gear, one should prioritize safety over style. It is crucial to protect yourself when you ride. Before riding out to your destination, make sure you are geared up with the following:
- It should not move around on the head, nor place pressure on the forehead. Keep it on for 5 or 10 minutes before you buy, to be sure it is comfortable.
- When the straps are securely fastened, ask someone to try to pull it off your head by grasping it at the base if your neck and pulling up and forward over your eyes. The nose contact is the limit for most helmets, the less movement the better. If it comes off, it is dangerous – chose another style.
- Check your peripheral vision to make sure you are happy with the width of the eye-port. If you wear glasses, do they cause pressure points?
- Pillions are often given poorly fitting helmets. If it moves around on the head, it will not provide adequate impact protection in a crash.
Motorcycle jackets, as well as vests and pants, are mostly made of leather. Why? Leather is flexible and durable compared to other materials. It gives your skin protection from the sun, the rain, the wind and even little flying insects. The leather used for motorcycle jackets is thicker than those we are used to for other jackets and garments. Many riders choose a leather motorcycle jacket over other types because it is safer, classy, stylish and can easily accommodate all sizes and types. Most motorcycle leather jackets have vents to control airflow into the jacket to keep cool during hot days. For more information see“How to buy mens leather jacket”.
In choosing the right motorcycle pants, fit and style are not enough. It is also important to check on the material for durability. The most popular material used for motorcycle pants, aside from leather, is Kevlar, a lightweight synthetic aramid fiber with extremely high tensile strength. Kevlar is well known for its use in body armor and it now has widespread use in motorcycle gear for its abrasion and heat-resistant properties. Other materials used in motorcycle pants are aramid, ballistic nylon, cordura, keprotec and gore-tex.
Balance is important when riding a motorcycle and having to wear bad footwear is detrimental to motorcycle riding. According to blog website, Kinja, feet and ankles are very fragile especially when riding.
When buying motorcycle boots, at the very minimum, you’ll need a rugged work or combat boot that provides your foot with good grip, your ankle with tight support and protects your foot from being crushed in an impact with a strong sole. For anything faster, you’ll want a specific motorcycle boot. Sport boots are designed to provide good articulation and feel without sacrificing protection. Dirt boots are designed to limit the articulation of your ankle and provide a solid, comfortable platform to stand on for long periods. Touring boots are designed to be comfortable no matter how bad the weather while providing decent protection. Dedicated motorcycle boots will also interface better with motorcycle pants, working together to increase weather protection, control and comfort.
Although gloves are an accessory, this is a very essential gear when riding. We humans instinctively try to catch our falls, so your hands are likely going to be the first thing to touch down in a crash. Hands are also an awesome combination of extreme fragility and utter necessity. Your gloves should not only be comfortable to wear but should protect your hands from impact and abrasion. It is important that they have knuckle protection.
