Motorcycle Jackets: Leathers vs Textiles
Should I buy a leather or textile motorcycle Jacket? That is a question we get asked a lot here at Bikewear Direct, so we decided to make a little blog to help explain the differences, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of leather motorcycle jackets and textile motorcycle jackets.
The easy answer, if you have plenty of money to spend, is buy a different jacket for each mood, bike, road and weather condition that you plan on riding. While that may sound crazy to some people, some people, many motorcyclists who have a long history of riding have built up exactly that type of gear collection and for good reason. The fact of the matter is, all motorcycle gear is a compromise of one type or another.
Where you might be giving up some protection in extreme conditions you might be gaining all day comfort, so no one piece of gear is perfect for all roads in all conditions for all riders. Obviously picking a jacket is a very personal choice–and getting a jacket that suits your style and matches your bike, as well as being comfortable is important. So here are the pro’s and con’s that go with both…
Leather motorcycle Jackets
Let’s start with the leather jacket option. What leather does very well is protect you. While textile materials have come a long way, leather is still no.1 when it comes to protecting you against road rash etc. Most leather jackets hold up so well in a crash that they can not only protect you, but manage to survive and can be worn after. The cowhide leather used to make our products is an ultra hardwearing material which lasts a very long time – many people keep their jacket for decades!
In wet weather conditions leather can end up leaving you wet through, though there are some leather treatments you can use to ease this. If you are looking for a jacket to wear in hot weather and want leather, then perforation can help. These tiny holes in the leather will allow for plenty of air flow, keeping you comfortable as long as you are moving. Remember that black attracts heat so will still heat up on a sunny day, especially when you’re sat still.
Textile motorcycle jacket
Textile and mesh motorcycle jackets are great because they can be very versatile. Mesh textiles are great for air-flow and is a lot lighter in weight than leather. The main advantage to textile gear is the availability of waterproof options- and a waterproof jacket if essential particularly in the wonderful British weather!
Most textile jackets available have armour in the key areas (elbows, shoulders, and back) and so if you crash, the jacket should protect you. However you should bear in mind that there are different grades of materials to look for, in particular over the impact areas. Some jackets are reinforced incredibly well, while others are much lighter in weight and may not survive a high speed crash.
Lastly, textile jackets are usually less expensive than leather, making them an especially popular option.
So in answer to the original question, which should you buy? Well, as you may have guessed, that all depends on what your specific requirements are. If you typically ride at higher speeds and prefer the classic biker look, then you should probably stick to leather. However, if your budget is more limited or you want something that is versatile in a variety of weather conditions, then textile may be best for you.
